The Myth of The Happily Ever After comes as a tri-fold card digisleeve holding 2 CDs: the new album plus A Celebration of Endings (Live).
Biffy Clyro built the record as a homegrown project, a direct reaction to their #1 album ‘A Celebration of Endings’ and a quick emotional answer to a turbulent year. Think of it as the other side of a coin, a before-and-after: the early optimism of 2020 brought back to earth with a resounding thud. Strange, cruel times shaped it, yet the band came out of it reinvigorated.
“This is a reaction to ‘A Celebration of Endings’,” says vocalist and guitarist Simon Neil. “This album is a real journey, a collision of every thought and emotion we’ve had over the past eighteen months.” He describes ‘A Celebration’ as carrying real fortitude, while this record embraces the vulnerabilities of being a band and a human in a twisted era. The title is the polar opposite, he adds, asking whether we create these narratives in our own minds for security when none of us know what waits at the end of the day.
Loss sits at the heart of the writing. “When you lose people that you love deeply and have been a big part of your life, it can make you question every single thing about your own life,” Neil says. Like many creative people, he struggles with dark thoughts, and those moments don’t stop. As the song puts it, ‘The devil never leaves.’
