Part indie rock opera, part tragic romance. Hundred Days pairs a book by The Bengsons and Sarah Gancher with music and lyrics by The Bengsons, and this album preserves the cast of the New York Theatre Workshop production.
Abigail Bengson, Shaun Bengson, Colette Alexander, Jo Lampert, Dani Markham and Reggie D. White all appear on the recording. Anne Kauffman directed the staging, with movement direction by Sonya Tayeh; The Bengsons, Ian Kagey and Kurt Deutsch produced the album.
Press reaction was strong from the start. The New York Times wrote that the Bengsons "offer luminous hope that a new generation of talent in American theater is taking up Stephen Sondheim's mantle of exquisite ambivalence." New York Magazine called the songs "ecstatic" and said the show "shines a light in the darkness." Earlier, in San Francisco, the San Jose Mercury News described it as "ablaze with the ephemeral nature of life and love" and "unconventional" — right down to the last plaintive wail. KQED Arts simply found the experience joyful, with songs "catchy, propulsive, and soul-soaringly jubilant."
The show was first developed and produced by Z Space, Lisa Steindler, Artistic Director, and piece by piece productions/Wendy vanden Heuvel. New York Theatre Workshop mounted it Off-Broadway on December 4, 2017, under Artistic Director Jim Nicola and Managing Director Jeremy Blocker.
