The record captures the 4-time Tony-nominated Broadway show Illinoise: A New Musical. Music and lyrics are by Sufjan Stevens, drawn from his album Illinois, with a book by Tony Award-winning director-choreographer Justin Peck (Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, Carousel) and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury (Fairview, Marys Seacole). Peck also directed and choreographed. Illinoise arrived on Broadway in April of this year, coming straight from two sold-out runs at the Park Avenue Armory and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. As the Washington Post put it, Stevens’ beloved classic “springs to epic life on stage,” with live music and vocals, choreography, and narratives about self-exploration and community built around the whole of Stevens’ album. The songs, with new arrangements by composer and pianist Timo Andres, a Nonesuch artist and frequent Stevens collaborator, plus Music Supervision and Direction by Nathan Koci, move from DIY folk and indie rock to marching band and ambient electronics, played by a live band and vocalists (Elijah Lyons, My Brightest Diamond, Tasha).
