Among Broadway's musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate carries a particular shine: it won the first-ever Tony Award for Best Musical. Onstage romance and backstage
passion share the evening with comedy high and low, a dash of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, and a stylish, sexy, sophisticated songbook that runs from "Too Darn Hot" to "So In Love" and "Always True To You In My Fashion." Roundabout brings it all back with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate.
The New York Times raves that "Kelli O'Hara is sublime. She sings so gorgeously it almost melts the theater." In the Washington Post's view the show is unmissable, with Scott Ellis' first-class Broadway revival raising Kiss Me, Kate's sparkle quotient to incandescence. The Observer notes that this blissfully-staged Roundabout revival packs a delightful comic punch.
This is Roundabout's 24th cast album recording, counted from the launch of the musical theatre program with She Loves Me in 1993. Kurt Deutsch and Lawrence Manchester produced the album.
Major support came from Susan and Ed Forst, Leni and Peter May, Katheryn Patterson and Tom Kempner, and Diane and Tom Tuft. Additional support was provided by The Howard Gilman Foundation, Harry E. Gould Jr., Abby F. Kohnstamm, The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, Nancy and Jay Nichols, and The Cole Porter Estate.
