Circles is Mac Miller's sixth and final studio album, and it works as a sister record to 2018's full length Swimming. Jon Brion helped complete it; he and Miller had worked together on Swimming and were still collaborating on Circles at the time of Miller's passing.
Sonically it sits apart from its predecessor, though plenty of the qualities that earned Swimming its acclaim carry over: Miller leaning further into his singing voice alongside the rapping, live instrumentation, and lyrics that stay earnest and confessional. Influences surface in the details — the T-Rex guitar tone on “Surf,” a production feel that nods to Plastic Ono Band-era John Lennon, and a cover of Arthur Lee's 1972 single “Everybody's Gotta Live.”
Two LPs, and a weighty final entry in the catalog of an artist who kept redrawing what rap could sound like.
