Nickelback hits hard on 'Silver Side Up,' and the record doesn't ease you in. "Never Again," a song about spousal abuse, opens the album with rocket-fueled intensity, and from there Chad Kroeger keeps writing about the darker sides of domestic and personal life without softening the language.
That focus on real issues makes a refreshing change of pace in 2001's sea of angry rockers. "Too Bad" looks at an emotionally and physically absent father through the eyes of a regretful adult-child, all pounding drums and raw vocal. Then there's "How You Remind Me," the mid-tempo thundering track with thick chords and a brooding tone that broke the band to mainstream audiences; Kroeger sounds weary as he captures the self-defeated feeling of being emotionally dissected by a lover, and the line "'cause living with me must have damn near killed you" lands hard.
