Rags: The Musical follows a group of Jewish immigrants stepping off the boat to begin again in America. It's a warm story with real weight behind it.
A young mother and her son leave Ellis Island behind and go looking for a home as the 20th century opens. Manhattan's Lower East Side isn't paved with gold, yet the music of opportunity, optimism and hope runs through its streets. The score comes from the songwriters behind Wicked and Annie, with the book writer of Fiddler on the Roof, and the result is a sweeping saga of America's immigrant past.
Captured here is the transfer of the UK premiere of this new version, which opened at Hope Mill Theatre in February 2019 under director Bronagh Lagan (Little Women, Putting It Together, Promises, Promises).
Love, loss and hope sit at the centre of the show. The score celebrates the multicultural music filling New York's streets in 1910, and the saga moves between hope and disappointment, power and greed, strength and love, with memorable music throughout.
