Triple orchid colored vinyl carries the full Suffs (Original Broadway Cast Recording) — the official musical companion to the new show from singer-songwriter Shaina Taub, which picked up 6 Tony Award nominations. Atlantic Records put it out.
Taub grew up in rural Vermont, playing Broadway cast albums on the boombox in her bedroom. When the album was announced in April, right after the show's official opening, she said that making one of her own with this cast and orchestra went past her wildest childhood dreams, and thanked Atlantic Records for making it happen.
Among the tracks are the show's call to arms, “The March (We Demand Equality),” plus “Great American Bitch,” “If We Were Married,” “Worth It” and “Ladies.”
The musical runs at Broadway's Music Box Theatre. Six 2024 Tony Awards nominations came its way, including “Best Musical.” Taub was nominated for “Best Book of a Musical” and “Best Original Score”; Nikki M. James, who plays Ida B. Wells, earned a nod for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical.” Leigh Silverman was nominated for “Best Direction of a Musical” and Paul Tazewell for “Best Costume Design of a Musical.” Three Outer Critics Circle Awards also came in: “Outstanding New Broadway Musical,” “Outstanding Book of a Musical” (Shaina Taub) and “Outstanding Score” (Shaina Taub).
New York Magazine called the show “smart, witty, and teeming with mighty performances.” It digs into the victories and failures of a fight for equality that isn't finished. Taub wrote the book, music and lyrics, and plays Alice Paul — only the second woman ever to write the book, music and lyrics of a Broadway musical and star in it. Her credits include an Obie Award, an Emmy nomination, the Kleban Prize, the Fred Ebb Award, the Jonathan Larson Grant and the NYCLU's Michael Friedman Freedom Award for activism; she created and starred in musical adaptations of Twelfth Night and As You Like It at Shakespeare in the Park, has three solo albums out, and records for Atlantic.
