Phil Collins trimmed the track list for this one and explained why: "I decided to call this version of 'Going Back' 'The Essential Going Back.' In retrospect, I included too much music on the original version, and I believe that too much is not always a good thing. Hence this trimmed down selection of my favourite Motown songs."
"Going Back" first appeared in 2010, and it was his first studio album since 2002. It also put him back at #1 on the charts. The record was a personal labour of love: Collins recreating, faithfully, the soul gems that shaped his musical life.
One of the final entries in his "Take A Look At Me Now" series, this release was curated and compiled by Collins himself. His aim with the concept was to show how the songs have evolved, with most of the extra material across the series drawn from live performances. Setting the original studio takes beside later performances reveals how a Collins song takes on a life of its own once it leaves the studio. Grammy-nominated Nick Davis remastered every album in the series. Each one carries a bold artwork concept too, with Collins restaging his poses from the original covers in new photography shot in the present day. The set comes as a 2CD package: disc one holds the original album remastered, disc two gathers demos, live recordings and S-sides from its parent album.
