The Jonathan Larson Project brings together music from the late Jonathan Larson, the writer behind Rent and tick, tick… BOOM! — one an iconic Broadway landmark, the other a beloved musical gem. Streaming and download versions are out now. Among the cast are Nick Blaemire, Lauren Marcus, Andy Mientus, Krysta Rodriguez and George Salazar.
What you're hearing grew out of a concert first staged at Feinstein’s/54 Below. Jennifer Ashley Tepper (Be More Chill) directed and conceived it, while Charlie Rosen (Be More Chill, Prince of Broadway, Honeymoon in Vegas, Charlie Rosen’s Broadway Big Band) handled music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements. Playing in the five-piece band: musical director Natalie Tenenbaum, Charlie Rosen, Cody Owen Stine, Megan Talay and Marques Walls, with Danielle Gimbal as copyist. Producing credits go to Jennifer Ashley Tepper, Charlie Rosen and Kurt Deutsch.
Larson died at 35, before the worldwide acclaim arrived. Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize came posthumously, and his songs have since been performed in 25 languages, from Mexico to Japan to Italy, from summer camps to the silver screen to Broadway. DC Metro Theater Arts called the Feinstein’s/54 Below premiere “a treasure trove of unperformed, unrecorded, and unheard material,” and Asbury Park Press named it “One of the Top 10 Broadway special events of 2018.” TheaterMania.com put it plainly: “this show seems destined for a future life onstage and on disc. His songs simply deserve to be heard.
